I read "What Does It Mean to Be Well-Educated?" by Alfie Kohn. In this reading it asked how is a person well educated? Is a person who is well educated really good at math problems, or is that not really that important? This article took a look at the different ways in which people are considered educated in today's world. In the US we use standardized tests to measure the amount of information a student knows. This article says that that is not an accurate way to determine whether a person is educated or not. Also it brought up the point of teaching job skills. Should schools teach students just what they are going to need to know in their future career? Kohn thinks it would be a bad idea to do this, and I also think it would be a bad idea too. Another point this article brought up was having students memorizing facts. Would you consider an educated person someone who can tell you a lot of different historical facts? If you did then I can bet that most of the people in the US would not be considered educated. This method only tests a persons short term memory. The Met School found five "habits of mind" they are evidence, connections, point of view, supposition, and relevance. These methods help a person work through a problem to gain insight.
